The Israeli songwriter and peace activist Ofer Golany played on August 17, 2007 in the church of the ESG (Evangelische Studierendengemeinde) in Mainz. He was accompanied by Angelika Wagener (cello) and Herwig Strobl (violin). The event was organized by: Bildungswerk Hessen der DFG-VK, DFG-VK Mainz, Antirassistischer Arbeitskreis (ARAK), Medieninitiative Mainz/Wiesbaden Radio Quer e.V.

Question 1: On August 17 you played in Mainz and I could listen to your music. It was a wonderful evening with songs ranging from different kinds of folklore to songwriter's songs. Since when do you make music and how did your art develop?

Ofer Golany: I make music for already a few incarnations and it seems that the nature of musicians is that they move around. That is how Klezmer got from Rumania to America. The musicians are only the carriers and this time the arrangements were for violin (Herwig) and cello (Angelika). Music takes from this and that and makes new combinations. I started with folk blues and rock and roll and moved to jazz and cabaret with flamenco and klezmer on the way and texts that have something to say.

Question 2: You also told the audience about peace work, for example with your project "Guns 2 Guitars". What does this work entail and what is your motivation for it?

Ofer Golany: The work is consciousness raising. Getting people to wake up to the concepts of free choice and realize that politicians manipulate them using fear to believe in the necessity of a military. My role is to question and to lead others to question and then offer alternatives to the military. With humor, theater and music as tools.

Question 3: The State of Israel says that it is threatened by aggressive neigbors and that it must therefore be strict and hard. Do you share this notion, and if so, are you not promoting insecurity if you keep people from joining the army?

Ofer Golany: States lie. This is not to say that Israel's neighboring states are idealistic and benevolent, but they are also lying, and as states they have an interest in the continuation of war. An individual can disassociate from this paranoid game and create alternative realities. Minimize identification with a state and create bridges to neighbors. Food, education and health care cost much less than war.

Question 4: What is your explanation for the fact that so many people accept violence and guns? Why can we as a global community not resist states (governments) that lie?

Ofer Golany: Too much power which corrupts is in the hands of men rather than women and the usual illusion that we are all separate – lack of imagination. How many people do not have a television??? Individualists are often ahead of the herd.

Question 5: What is your dream vision for life in Jerusalem and the rest of the country in, say, 20 years time?

Ofer Golany: Polyglot – everyone is fluent in English and speaks 2 or 3 other languages. Arts and health are the main subjects in schools. Primary education is free and until age 24. Gaza is a world leader in solar energy and exports house systems made in Israel and all cars are electric. Arabs have equal rights and there is a civil service in education and health care. Most managerial positions are held by women. Jerusalem is a demilitarized international city with a female mayor. Armies are relief organizations that respond to earthquakes ... Special units for taking care of the elderly ... My CDs have sold 144.000 copies.

Der israelische Liedermacher und Friedensaktivist Ofer Golany spielte am 17.08.2007 in der Kirche der ESG (Evangelische Studierendengemeinde) in Mainz. Begleitet wurde er von Angelika Wagener (Cello) und Herwig Strobl (Violine). Die Veranstalter waren: Bildungswerk Hessen der DFG-VK, DFG-VK Mainz, Antirassistischer Arbeitskreis (ARAK), Medieninitiative Mainz/Wiesbaden Radio Quer e.V.

Frage 1: Am 17. August spieltest du in Mainz und ich konnte deiner Musik zuhören. Es war ein wunderschöner Abend mit Liedern, deren Spektrum von verschiedenen Folklore-Arten bis zu Liedermacher-Songs reichte. Seit wann machst du Musik und wie hat sich deine Kunst entwickelt?

Ofer Golany: Ich mache schon seit einigen Inkarnationen Musik und es scheint so, als liege es in der Natur von Musikern, herumzureisen. So kam Klezmer von Rumänien nach Amerika. Die Musiker sind nur die Träger und dieses Mal waren die Arrangements für Violine (Herwig) und Cello (Angelika). Die Musik nimmt von hier etwas und von dort und schafft neue Kombinationen. Ich habe mit Folkblues und Rock and Roll angefangen und mich dann in Richtung Jazz und Kabarett bewegt, mit Flamenco und Klezmer und Texten, die etwas aussagen.

Frage 2: Du hast dem Publikum auch von Friedensarbeit erzählt, zum Beispiel mit deinem Projekt „Guns 2 Guitars“. Worum geht es bei dieser Arbeit und was ist deine Antriebskraft dafür?

Ofer Golany: Es geht bei dieser Arbeit um Bewusstmachung. Darum, Leute dazu zu bringen, aufzuwachen und sich klar zu machen, dass sie eine freie Wahl haben und dass Politiker sie manipulieren, indem sie Angst benutzen, so dass an die Notwendigkeit des Militärs geglaubt wird. Meine Rolle ist es, das in Frage zu stellen und andere dazu bringen, es in Frage zu stellen und dann Alternativen zum Militär anzubieten. Mit Humor, Theater und Musik als Werkzeugen.

Frage 3: Der Staat Israel sagt, dass er von aggressiven Nachbarn bedroht wird und dass er daher streng und hart sein muss. Teilst du diese Auffassung, und wenn, förderst du dann nicht Unsicherheit, wenn du Leute davon abhältst, zur Armee zu gehen?

Ofer Golany: Staaten lügen. Das soll nicht heißen, dass Israels Nachbarstaaten idealistisch und gütig sind, sondern sie lügen ebenfalls und haben als Staaten ein Interesse daran, dass das Kriegsgeschehen weitergeht. Ein Individuum kann sich von diesem paranoiden Spiel lossagen und alternative Wirklichkeiten schaffen. Die Identifizierung mit dem Staat minimieren und Brücken zu Nachbarn bilden. Nahrung, Bildung und das Gesundheitswesen kosten viel weniger als Krieg.

Frage 4: Was ist deine Erklärung dafür, dass so viele Leute Gewalt und Gewehre akzeptieren? Warum können wir als globale Gemeinschaft den Staaten (Regierungen), die lügen, nicht widerstehen?

Ofer Golany: Zu viel korrumpierende Macht liegt in den Händen von Männern (eher als Frauen). Dazu kommt die übliche Illusion, dass wir alle voneinander getrennt sind – ein Mangel an Vorstellungskraft. Wie viele Leute gibt es, die keinen Fernseher haben??? Individualisten sind der Herde oft voraus.

Frage 5: Was ist deine Wunschvorstellung für das Leben in Jerusalem und dem Rest des Landes in, sagen wir, 20 Jahren?

Ofer Golany: Mehrsprachigkeit – jeder kann flüssiges Englisch und zwei oder drei andere Sprachen. Künste und Gesundheit sind die Hauptfächer in den Schulen. Schulische Grundausbildung ist frei und bis zum 24sten Lebensjahr. Gaza ist führend in der Welt, was Solarenergie angeht, und exportiert Haus-Systeme made in Israel und alle Autos sind elektrisch. Araber haben gleiche Rechte und es gibt einen zivilen Bildungs- und Gesundheitsservice. Die meisten Manager-Positionen werden von Frauen besetzt. Jerusalem ist eine entmilitarisierte internationale Stadt mit einem weiblichen Bürgermeister. Armeen sind Hilfswerke, die bei Erdbeben eingesetzt werden ... Sondereinheiten, die sich um Senioren kümmern ... Meine CDs haben sich 144.000 Mal verkauft.
