Der Sänger und Songwriter Ozzy Balou ist nach neun Jahren im Ausland vermutlich wieder zurück in Deutschland. Das jedenfalls berichten drei Personen aus seinem damaligen engeren Umfeld. Sie erhielten gestern jeweils eine Email mit dem Titel: „Never kill a Rock'n'Roller“. Der Text der Mail war in allen Fällen derselbe, nämlich: „Liebe Dotwins, nachdem Leonard aus dem Kloster abgehauen ist, ist es fürchterlich langweilig geworden. Ich denke, dass ich jetzt auch etwas an die frische Luft gehe. Hamburg is such a chill! Nukleare Grüße von Ozzy.“

Die drei Adressaten der absenderlos verschickten Botschaft sind sich kopfschüttelnd einig über die Authentizität des Schreibens. Noch am gestrigen Abend haben sie sich kurzgeschlossen. Sie trafen sich in der Wohnung von Carl – einem der Drei – in Altona.

Ozzy Balou wurde am 16.08.1969 in Münster in Westfalen geboren. Sein Vater, ein Franzose mit marrokanischem Ursprung, arbeitete lange als Chirurg am städtischen Krankenhaus. Seine Mutter unterrichtete Geschichte und Französisch am Gymnasium. Schon früh fand Ozzy in die Münsteraner Musikszene und machte sich dort einen Namen mit der Band THE CHEAT. Ihre erste Single WATCHING THE SIGNS gelangte 1986 in mehrere überregionale Charts. Die Musikpresse prognostizierte ihm eine erfolgreiche Karriere. Aus Gründen, über die er nie gesprochen hat, verließ er das Land zum ersten Mal für längere Zeit.

Von 1987 bis 1988 lebte Ozzy in Marrakesch in Marokko. Über diese Zeit ist nichts bekannt. Als er zurückkam, gründete er in Hamburg die Band OZZY AND THE BULLETS in der Besetzung Ozzy Balou (vocals, guitar), Michael Hansmann (guitar, vocals), Oliver Marx (bass, vocals), Carl Ziegler (drums) und Maria Zigovia (keyboards, vocals). Auch Maria bekam gestern eine Mail.

Den nationalen Erfolg erreichten die BULLETS 1989 mit der Hit-Single MOVING THE HOUSE und der B-Seite SOUTHERN LINE BLUES (Stamp Records). Es folgten monatelange Studio-Sessions, die zu den Alben DEBUT und POISON führten. Währenddessen spielte die Band nächtelang im legendären Musikclub BLUESLAND, oft spontan nach einer Studiosession. Mehrere kleinere Tourneen brachten die Band durch Deutschland, Frankreich, England, Österreich und Marokko.

Im Frühjahr 1992 kam es zu Streitigkeiten in der Band, deren Ursachen bis heute nicht geklärt sind. Fest steht, dass auch die lokale Presse, die zuvor Ozzy Balou gegenüber meist positiv eingestellt war, ihre Meinung geändert hatte. Der freie Journalist Simon Brecht recherchierte damals ausführlich über die Band und Ozzy, doch hielt er in seinem Tagebuch fest, dass es seit dem Herbst 1991 nicht mehr möglich war, einen Artikel über Ozzy Balou zu platzieren, obwohl es an Neuigkeiten wahrlich nicht gefehlt hätte. Am 10.09.1992 dann brannte das BLUESLAND nach einem Anschlag völlig aus. Es gab sieben Verletzte, zwei davon trugen bleibende Schäden davon. Der Sachschaden belief sich auf mehr als zwei Millionen Mark. Die Umstände der Tat konnten nie geklärt werden. Am 14.12.1992 brach Ozzy Balou seine Kontakte in Hamburg ab und ging nach Paris. Seitdem fehlte von ihm jede Spur. Simon Brecht konnte im Januar einen letzten kurzen Artikel im Hamburger Blatt veröffentlichen. Simon war der dritte, der gestern von Ozzy eine Nachricht bekam.

Simon Brecht war es auch, der mich gestern um kurz vor Mitternacht anrief. Er sagte mir, dass es jetzt an der Zeit sei, die Geschichte von Ozzy Balou zu erzählen. Die Drei seien sich einig darüber, dass irgendetwas geschehen würde, denn Ozzy habe sich sicher nicht ohne Grund gemeldet, und nur, wenn jetzt eine Rekonstruktion der Ereignisse aufgenommen würde, könne man überhaupt in der Lage sein, der Konfrontation zu begegnen, denn eine Konfrontation würde es sicherlich geben, darüber war man sich gestern in Altona einig.

Da Simon DIE GESCHICHTE DER MARIANNE S. gelesen hat, in der ich schon einmal die Aufgabe des berichtenden Außenstehenden übernommen hatte, hat er mich schließlich als Unbeteiligten gebeten, diese Rekonstruktion vorzunehmen. Meine Bedenken, ich sei nicht der Richtige für diese Aufgabe, da ich von Ozzy nur eine dunkle und fragmentarische Vorstellung habe, wurden als „im Gegenteil sehr vorteilhaft“ kommentiert. Man bat mich also darum, über einen gewissen Zeitraum eine Chronistentätigkeit aufzunehmen, indem ich alle Fakten und Dokumente, die es aus Ozzy Balous Vergangenheit gibt und die mich im Laufe der Zeit erreichen werden, zusammentrage, wobei mir im Wesentlichen die Aufgabe des mitdenkenden Kompilators zukommt, der alle aktuellen Ereignisse in den Verlauf der Erzählung einflicht.

Simon übermittelte mir auch per Mail einen Brief von Maria und fügte hinzu, es sei am Sinnvollsten, die Nachrichten von Ozzy Balou gleich ins Internet zu stellen, damit Leute, die ihn von früher kennen, die Geschichte zeitgleich verfolgen können. Möglicherweise melde sich jemand, der zur Rekonstruktion beitragen könne. Für den Fall also, so Simon Brecht, dass jemand Dokumente über Ozzy Balou auf dem Dachboden hat, seien es Erinnerungen, Zeitungsartikel, Tagebucheintragungen, Fotos, Zeugenaussagen oder sonstiges, gebe es nun eine zentrale Sammel- und Auswertungsstelle, die für jeden einsehbar sei. Außerdem würde auch Ozzy die Sache auf diese Art verfolgen können und sogar eine Möglichkeit finden, sich selbst zu Wort zu melden. Diesen Argumenten habe ich nichts entgegenzusetzen. So werde ich tun, was ich kann, um Licht in das Dunkel der Geschichte des Ozzy Balou zu bringen und hoffe, dass man mit dem Ergebnis zufrieden sein kann.

Singer and songwriter Ozzy Balou is probably back in Germany after nine years abroad. At least that's what three people from his former close environment report. Yesterday they each received an email with the title: "Never kill a Rock'n'Roller". The text of the mail was the same in all cases, namely: "Dear Dotwins, after Leonard ran away from the monastery, it has become terribly boring. I think I'll go out for some fresh air now, too. Hamburg is such a chill! Nuclear greetings from Ozzy."

Shaking their heads, the three addressees of the senderless message agree on the authenticity of the letter. They were short-circuiting as soon as last night. They met in the apartment of Carl - one of the three - in Altona.

Ozzy Balou was born on 16.08.1969 in Münster in Westphalia. His father, a Frenchman of Moroccan origin, worked for a long time as a surgeon at the city hospital. His mother taught history and French at the Gymnasium. Ozzy found his way into the Münster music scene at an early age and made a name for himself there with the band THE CHEAT. Their first single WATCHING THE SIGNS entered several regional charts in 1986. The music press predicted a successful career for him. For reasons he never talked about, he left the country for the first time for a long time.

From 1987 to 1988, Ozzy lived in Marrakesh, Morocco. Nothing is known about this period. The BULLETS achieved national success in 1989 with the hit single MOVING THE HOUSE and the B-side SOUTHERN LINE BLUES (Stamp Records). Months of studio sessions followed, resulting in the albums DEBUT and POISON. Meanwhile, the band played nights at the legendary music club BLUESLAND, often spontaneously after a studio session. In the spring of 1992, disputes arose in the band, the causes of which have not been clarified to this day. Freelance journalist Simon Brecht did extensive research on the band and Ozzy at that time, but he recorded in his diary that since the fall of 1991 it was no longer possible to place an article about Ozzy Balou, although there was certainly no lack of news. Then on 10.09.1992 the BLUESLAND burned out completely after an attack. Seven people were injured, two of them suffered permanent damage. The material damage amounted to more than two million marks. The circumstances of the crime could never be clarified. On 14.12.1992 Ozzy Balou broke off his contacts in Hamburg and went to Paris. Since then there has been no trace of him. Simon Brecht was able to publish a last short article in the paper Hamburger Blatt in January. Simon was the third person to receive news of Ozzy yesterday.

Simon Brecht was also the one who called me yesterday just before midnight. He told me that now was the time to tell the story of Ozzy Balou. He said that the three of them agreed that something was going to happen, because Ozzy had certainly not come forward without a reason, and only if a reconstruction of the events was now taken up would they be able to face the confrontation at all, because there would certainly be a confrontation, they agreed on that yesterday in Altona.

Since Simon had read THE STORY OF MARIANNE S., in which I had already once taken on the task of the reporting outsider, and finally asked me, as an uninvolved party, to undertake this reconstruction. My misgivings that I was not the right person for this task, since I had only a dim and fragmentary idea of Ozzy, were commented as "on the contrary very advantageous". So I was asked to take up a chronicler activity over a period of time, compiling all the facts and documents that exist from Ozzy Balou's past that will reach me over time, essentially giving me the task of the thinking compiler, weaving all the current events into the course of the narrative.

Simon also e-mailed me a letter from Maria, adding that it would make the most sense to put Ozzy Balou's news on the Internet right away, so that people who knew him before could follow the story simultaneously. Possibly some people would come forward to contribute to the reconstruction. So, according to Simon Brecht, if someone has documents about Ozzy Balou in the attic, be it memories, newspaper articles, diary entries, photos, witness statements or anything else, there is now a central collection and evaluation point that can be viewed by anyone. In addition, Ozzy will also be able to follow the matter in this way and even find a way to speak up himself. I have nothing to oppose these arguments. So I will do what I can to bring light into the darkness of Ozzy Balou's history and hope that you can be satisfied with the result.
