Beitrag von Simon Brecht: Vier Zeitungsartikel aus den Jahren 1990-1993. Anmerkung: Die folgenden vier Artikel dokumentieren einige Etappen aus dem Leben von Ozzy Balou und der Band. Da es uns darum geht, einen Sachverhalt aufzuklären, habe ich nur solche der mir bekannten Artikel verwendet, die uns näher zum Kern des Problems bringen. Die Lobeshymnen der Musikpresse und der Illustrierten habe ich mir dabei ebenso gespart wie die Artikel, die schlecht recherchiert und zu fehlerhaft sind. Davon gibt es leider einige. Es erscheint mir insgesamt ohnehin nicht vorteilhaft, alle verfügbaren Daten ins Netz zu stellen, weil das Material dann schnell unübersichtlich würde. Über den Artikel aus dem HAMBURGER BOTEN wird noch zu sprechen sein. Aber das ist nicht meine Aufgabe. Von meinen eigenen Artikeln habe ich nur einen Teil ausgewählt, denn ich möchte mich nicht durch übermäßige Wortbeiträge aufdrängen. Ich bin bekanntermaßen ein Freund von Ozzy, so wie Maria und Carl, und ich möchte nicht den Eindruck erwecken, dass es uns schlicht darum geht, für Ozzy Partei zu ergreifen. Das ist nämlich nicht der Fall. Vielmehr sind wir vorgestern in Altona übereingekommen, dass unser Hauptanliegen sein wird, eine ernst gemeinte und übergreifende Diskussion in Gang zu setzen.

Erfolg für Rockmusiker Ozzy Balou und seine „Bullets“
Volle Säle, wohin das Auge blickt. Wenn Ozzy and the Bullets zum Rock'n'Roll aufrufen, steht das Publikum Kopf. Innerhalb von knapp zwei Jahren gelang der Gitarren-Band eine beispiellose Karriere. Ende 1988 fand das junge Songwriter-Talent Ozzy Balou in die Hamburger Musikszene. Mit dem Song „Moving the House“ erreichten Ozzy and the Bullets im März 89 Platz 8 der nationalen Hitparade. Im Herbst folgte die LP „Debut“, die von der Musikpresse beachtet wurde. Der Sound der fünfköpfigen Band lässt sich vielleicht beschreiben als eine Mischung aus Queen und den Beach Boys mit verschiedenen Ethno-Elementen und durchweg originellen Kompositionen. Produziert und gemanagt werden die Bullets von Mike Roberts von Stamp Records. Neben ihrer laufenden Deutschlandtournee traten die Bullets im April auch mehrfach in Frankreich und im Mai in Österreich auf. Die nächsten angekündigten Auftrittstermine in Hamburg sind der 14.07. (Markthalle), der 21.07. (Fabrik) und der 28.07.1990 (Bluesland). sb

Razzia im Bluesland. Rocksänger Ozzy Balou über Nacht in Gewahrsam
In der Nacht zum Mittwoch gegen 0 Uhr 30 fand im Musikclub und Szenetreff Bluesland im Schanzenviertel nach einem Rockkonzert eine unangekündigte Personenkontrolle statt. Die Polizei ging dabei dringenden Hinweisen nach, die darauf deuteten, dass sich unter den Gästen der Diskothek einige gesuchte Personen aus links-autonomen Gruppen befanden, die für die Ausschreitungen am Wochenende nahe der Hafenstraße verantwortlich seien. Es wurden sieben Personen vorläufig festgenommen, darunter Rocksänger Ozzy Balou, der im Verlauf der Razzia gegen einen Beamten handgreiflich wurde. Gestern vormittag wurden fünf der sieben Festgenommenen wieder auf freien Fuß gesetzt. Balou wird sich wegen Widerstands gegen die Staatsgewalt zu verantworten haben, ist aber ebenfalls wieder frei. Bei der Razzia im Bluesland wurden zehn Gramm Marihuana beschlagnahmt.

Diskothek „Bluesland“ in Hamburg nach Brand zerstört
Die bekannte Diskothek „Bluesland“ im Hamburger Schanzenviertel fiel am vorgestrigen Samstag einem schweren Anschlag zum Opfer. Gegen 22 Uhr brach im Keller des Gebäudes ein Feuer aus, das schnell das gesamte Gebäude erfasste. Nach Augenzeugenberichten entstand etwa fünfzehn Minuten später Panik unter den etwa 200 Besuchern. Das Feuer blockierte offenbar den Weg durch die Haupttür, und die meist jugendlichen Gäste benutzten Nebenausgänge und Fenster, um sich aus den Flammen zu retten. Sieben Menschen wurden verletzt, zwei davon schwer. Die Feuerwehr brauchte bis zum Vormittag, um den Brand zu löschen. Sie wurde immer wieder von einstürzenden Bauteilen behindert. Dass sich noch Personen in dem Haus aufhalten, hält die Polizei für unwahrscheinlich, die Rettungsarbeiten sind inzwischen abgeschlossen. Der Sachschaden beläuft sich auf bis zu drei Millionen Mark. Eine Wiederherstellung des historischen Gebäudes ist nach Angaben eines Polizeisprechers nicht möglich. Da man am Brandherd ein Loch in der Wand sowie eine aufgebrochene Tür vorfand, gehen die Ermittler von Brandstiftung aus. Dringend Tatverdächtige gebe es derzeit aber nicht. Das Gebäude wurde 1978 von der Stadt Hamburg an den Pächter Gerhard Richter weitergegeben, der daraus das „Bluesland“ machte, einen frequentierten Musikclub mit einer Bühne für bis zu 350 Zuschauer und einem Restaurantbetrieb. In den 80-er Jahren wurde das „Bluesland“ zum In-Lokal der Reggae-Szene und zum Treffpunkt verschiedener lokaler und überregionaler Musikgruppen. Es galt als Symbol mehrerer Hamburger Subkulturen.

Die Rockgruppe Ozzy and the Bullets hat sich im letzten November aufgrund von Meinungsverschiedenheiten aufgelöst. Leadsänger Ozzy Balou ist im Dezember für unbestimmte Zeit nach Paris gezogen. Die Gruppe, die mehrmals in den Hitparaden vertreten war, war von 1989 bis 1991 eine der bekanntesten Hamburger Bands. Heimatbühne der Bullets war das im September abgebrannte „Bluesland“. sb

Contribution by Simon Brecht: Four newspaper articles from the years 1990-1993. Note: The following four articles document some stages in the life of Ozzy Balou and the band. Since our aim is to clarify a fact, I have used only those of the articles known to me that bring us closer to the core of the problem. I have spared the praises of the music press and magazines as well as the articles that are poorly researched and too flawed. Unfortunately, there are quite a few of these. All in all, it does not seem advantageous to me to put all available data on the net anyway, because the material would then quickly become confusing. The article from the HAMBURGER BOTE will be discussed later. But that is not my task. From my own articles I have selected only a part, because I do not want to impose myself by excessive word contributions. I am known to be a friend of Ozzy, as are Maria and Carl, and I don't want to give the impression that we are simply interested in taking sides with Ozzy. That is not the case. Rather, we agreed the day before yesterday in Altona that our main concern will be to initiate a serious and comprehensive discussion.

Success for rock musician Ozzy Balou and his "Bullets"
Full halls wherever the eye looks. When Ozzy and the Bullets call for rock'n'roll, the audience is upside down. Within barely two years, the guitar band managed an unprecedented career. At the end of 1988, the young songwriting talent Ozzy Balou found his way into the Hamburg music scene. With the song "Moving the House" Ozzy and the Bullets reached number 8 in the national hit parade in March 89. The LP "Debut" followed in the fall and received attention from the music press. The sound of the five-piece band can perhaps be described as a mixture of Queen and the Beach Boys with various ethnic elements and original compositions throughout. The Bullets are produced and managed by Mike Roberts of Stamp Records. In addition to their ongoing tour of Germany, the Bullets also performed several times in France in April and in Austria in May. The next announced dates in Hamburg are 14.07. (Markthalle), 21.07. (Fabrik) and 28.07.1990 (Bluesland). sb

Raid in Bluesland. Rock singer Ozzy Balou in custody overnight
In the night to Wednesday at about 0.30 a.m., an unannounced identity check took place in the music club and scene meeting place Bluesland in the Schanzenviertel after a rock concert. The police followed up on urgent tips that indicated that among the guests of the discotheque were some wanted persons from left-wing autonomous groups who were responsible for the riots near Hafenstraße at the weekend. Seven people were provisionally arrested, including rock singer Ozzy Balou, who got physical with an officer during the raid. Yesterday morning, five of the seven arrested were released. Balou will face charges of resisting arrest, but has also been released. Ten grams of marijuana were seized during the raid in Bluesland.

Discotheque "Bluesland" in Hamburg destroyed after fire
The well-known discotheque "Bluesland" in Hamburg's Schanzenviertel fell victim to a serious attack the day before yesterday. Around 10 p.m., a fire broke out in the basement of the building and quickly engulfed the entire building. According to eyewitnesses, about fifteen minutes later panic arose among the approximately 200 visitors. The fire apparently blocked the way through the main door, and the mostly teenage patrons used side exits and windows to escape the flames. Seven people were injured, two of them seriously. It took firefighters until mid-morning to put out the blaze. They were repeatedly hindered by collapsing building components. The police consider it unlikely that there are still people in the house, and the rescue work has now been completed. The damage to property amounts to up to three million marks. According to a police spokesman, it is not possible to restore the historic building. Since a hole in the wall and a broken door were found at the scene of the fire, investigators assume that the fire was caused by arson. Urgent crime suspects do not exist at present however. The building was passed on in 1978 by the city of Hamburg to the tenant Gerhard Richter, who turned it into the "Bluesland", a frequented music club with a stage for up to 350 spectators and a restaurant. In the 1980s, the "Bluesland" became the in-location of the reggae scene and a meeting place for various local and national music groups. It was considered a symbol of several Hamburg subcultures.

The rock group Ozzy and the Bullets broke up last November due to disagreements. Lead singer Ozzy Balou moved to Paris in December for an indefinite period. The group, which has been on the charts several times, was one of Hamburg's best-known bands from 1989 to 1991. The Bullets' home stage was the "Bluesland", which burned down in September. sb
